Zannier Sonop hotel entrance sign set against the rocky desert landscape of Namibia

Hotel Review: Zannier Sonop

It may sound strange, but initially, there were two main reasons why I had a trip to Namibia on my list: visiting Deadvlei and staying at Zannier Sonop in Namibia. Once my trip was confirmed and I was finalizing my itinerary, there were many other landmarks I looked forward to visiting. You can read more about my full trip to Namibia here (insert link).

Zannier Sonop had been on my bucket list for many years, and when I finally had the opportunity to book the accommodation, there was no hesitation.

First Impressions

From the moment I arrived at Zannier Sonop, I was immediately taken by the breathtaking scenery, the vast, stunning landscapes, and a deep sense that this would be a stay to remember.

Upon arriving at the base of the hotel, you’re greeted by the hotel manager and a transporter who stow your luggage and cart you to the top, toward the entrance. From there, you’re provided with non-alcoholic welcome drinks and begin the check-in process. Checking in was very smooth. About two days prior, they reach out to obtain your passport details and other pertinent information, which helps speed up the process once you arrive.

Following check-in, you’re given a tour of the grounds. One thing to be mindful of is that the grounds span nearly 14,000 acres of desert terrain. The property is built across boulders of varying sizes, from small to large, which is quite a sight to see. There are elevated walkways and many staircases connecting the common areas and suites. It’s beautifully designed, but definitely something to consider if you have mobility challenges. I decided to keep the tour short, only showing the main dining area and the suite, as the pool, spa, and fitness center were quite a distance away and I planned to explore the grounds later once settled in.

Room Details

I booked the one-bedroom tent, which was more than enough space for two people. While the idea of staying in a “tent” may scare some off, this was certainly a ‘luxury tent,’ as described. Air conditioning keeps you cool in the hot desert. Later in the evening, temperatures cooled down quite a bit; I opted for heat on a few occasions, and it warmed the space just as well as the AC cooled it.

All rooms include a terrace fitted with a chair so you can overlook the Namibian desert as you see fit. I often sat on the terrace throughout the day, with my favorite time being early morning to catch the sunrise. The room is fitted with a Nespresso machine and I loved sitting on the terrace with a freshly made coffee in hand.

Since you’re in the Namibian desert, there’s a chance you may spot wildlife. In the room, you’ll find many “goodies” to enhance your stay, including binoculars, a magnifying glass, a compass, and more. I particularly appreciated the bug spray in the bathroom as I tend to attract mosquitoes, so this was very welcome. Fortunately, I didn’t spot any critters in the room!

The bathroom is quite spacious, with double sinks, a bathtub/shower combo, and a toilet tucked into a corner, partially concealed for privacy. The water gets hot! I love hot showers regardless of the weather, so this was much appreciated. Along with bathroom essentials, you’ll enjoy the fluffy house robes and slippers.

There are only 10 rooms available at Sonop, and given the vast size of the grounds, even when the hotel was fully booked, you rarely ran into other guests. This definitely added to the exclusive feel of the place. If privacy is what you’re after, this is truly the place for you.

Amenities and Facilities

There were many offerings available to enhance the experience.

The spa facilities are lovely, I enjoyed a massage during my stay, and it was well worth it. The pool was a feast for the eyes, an infinity pool overlooking the desert with a bar nearby. Great for photos and poolside drinks.

One exceptionally unique amenity is the outdoor cinema. The pool area transforms into a cinema at night. The experience is an additional cost (400 NAD), but it was beyond worth it, an experience like no other. I learned that some travellers make the trip to Sonop solely for this. If you’re the first guest to book the cinema, you get to choose the film. I chose The Lion King, and it was surreal to watch in Namibia, it added something special to the experience. If you stay at Sonop, don’t skip the cinema.

I also opted for the private Sossusvlei and Deadvlei excursion. It was pricey, but Deadvlei is about a three-hour drive away, and your guide transports you there and back. I take a deeper dive into this excursion here (insert link). While it’s a splurge, I found it well worth it, and I’m glad I did it through Sonop.

There’s also a games room.

The fitness room on the premises was great. I managed a solid workout, whether mat pilates, strength training, or cardio. The gym had dumbbells up to 25 kg and a cable machine that went up to 70 kg, which I appreciated.

Sonop offers many experiences if you want to stay active. You can see the full list here (insert link).

Service

This is what made the stay extra special. There was a personal touch that elevated the experience. Staff knew you by first name, which eventually became reciprocal. From remembering your preferred seating and reserving it, to surprising you with a birthday cake, even without you directly disclosing your birthday, it was the small things that had such a big impact. There was never an ask that felt too great.

Turndown service is offered, which I always appreciate. And given the location and stunning sunrises/sunsets, you can request for the blinds (controlled from outside the room) to be opened at 6:30 am and closed at 7:30 pm, or whenever suits you.

While I’d love to highlight individual staff members who made the experience so special, many of the staff contributed meaningfully throughout our stay.

Tipping was never requested, nor did I feel pressured, but I chose to tip generously.

Location

Zannier Sonop is quite secluded, tucked deep into the Namib Desert, far from any towns or distractions. It offers a kind of stillness and silence you don’t realize you’ve been missing until you wake up to the sound of birds chirping. Its remote setting only adds to the sense of escape, making the experience feel exclusive and serene.

There’s another Zannier property in Namibia near Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH), approximately 45 km away. Zannier Sonop, however, is about 500 km from WDH. I didn’t stay at Omaanda, but based on my Sonop stay, the journey was worth it. My driver (insert link for Carlos Shuttles Transportation) warned me the drive would be bumpy, he called it an “African Massage.” And boy, was it bumpy! If you’re prone to motion sickness, just be aware, most of the road is gravel.

Value

The stay was absolutely worth the nightly rate. Every time you look up, it feels like you’re staring at a postcard. Every sight is picture-perfect. I took endless photos and still didn’t feel like it was enough.

There’s so much included in the rate that it feels like a full experience, not just a hotel stay. Aside from the cinema, most offerings are included. All things considered, I think it’s incredible value for the money.

Would I Stay Again?

Without question.

It was such a highlight of my trip that I’d be willing to visit Namibia again just to stay at Zannier Sonop once more. The rate includes all meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner, and tea time. Meals were luxe and generous—dinner was a five-course experience, with many options for breakfast and lunch. Tea time was also a lovely touch.

I was surprised to find that Sonop allows day visitors. Some come just for lunch or the cinema. If capacity allows, they may even stay longer and enjoy the grounds. This could be a great option for those on a tighter budget or just curious. That said, I personally think the effort to get there is reason enough to stay overnight.

There are ways to experience Sonop whether you’re budgeting or looking to treat yourself. Either way, you won’t regret it.
